Amriteshwar Temple was built in the 12th century by General Amriteshwar Dadanayaka during the rule of Hoysala King Veer Vallala II. The progress of the kings of the Hoysala Empire was due to the advanced type of carving in the temples. The architecture of the temples done by the Hoysala Empire at that time was not done by any empire of that time. Therefore, their fame was at its peak. A glimpse of which can still be seen in the state of Karnataka. The famous sculptor of Karnataka state was Mallitamma. And it is heard that he started his artistic career in Amritapura itself.

Deity of Amriteshwar Temple The main deity is Lord Shiva and the Shivling in the temple was brought from Nepal from the Kandikeval River which is a 300-year-old Trimurti. The idol of Sharada Devi is situated next to the Shivling.

Temple architecture The temple is located in a serene location near the reservoir of the Bhadra River. The 12th century structure was built in accordance with many distinctive features of Hoysala architecture. Experts consider this temple to be part of the Hoysala architectural style.

Artefacts in the temple

The oldest parts of the temple are the porch, garbhagriha, sukhanasi and navaranga and more additions and embellishments have been made over time. The wide hall or mandapa is one of the important parts of a Hoysala style temple. It has several impressive pillars which are ornate and lathe turned and has many internal structures in open and closed mandapas which have beautiful floral designs. The square shrine is situated under a superstructure of shikhara. The shikhara of the temple is decorated with intricate carvings of demon faces and small towers. On one of the towers of the temple is a carving of a Sal fighting a lion, the symbol of the Hoysalas. On the Sukhanashi tower, visitors can also see a beautiful panel depicting Shiva killing Gajasura. The wall reliefs of the temple give visitors a glimpse of important Hindu beliefs and stories which define the spiritual inclination of the Hoysala dynasty.

Depiction of epics

One of the important pieces of sculptures of the temple is the depiction of epics which can be found on the southern wall. The events of Ramayana are very accurately described in the paintings. There are also many important pillars depicting Hindu mythology. Mahabharata is also depicted in a clockwise direction and there is also a description of the life of Krishna. A stone inscription in the complex is considered to be a fine example of old Kannada poetry. The work is attributed to Janna, the most famous poet of the region.

You can also catch a direct bus to Shimoga and then go by local transport. It will take you to the temple.
